What Are UTM Parameters?
UTM stands for Urchin Tracking Module, a web analytics software that serves as the base for Google Analytics. UTM codes are also known as UTM parameters. A UTM code is a snippet of text added to the end of a URL to track the metrics and performance of a specific digital marketing campaign. Aspire-enabled UTM codes can contain up to five parameters: Campaign, Source, Medium, Content, and Term.
It is important to utilize UTM tracking to better understand where traffic is coming from and which campaigns are driving the most results. This information can be used to optimize your campaigns and improve ROI.
How It Works
When creating a new Link Tracking Offer through Aspire’s Sales Tracking dashboard, you will see a checkbox to enable UTM parameters. Once the checkbox is selected, you can add your desired UTM parameters. You must select at least one UTM parameter and may only add up to 3 custom parameters.
For a quick tutorial on how to add UTM parameters to a Link Tracking Offer, check out this video.
Below is an overview of the UTM parameters you may choose to add:
Source: identifies the traffic source, such as Instagram, TikTok, or a newsletter
Medium: identifies the specific channel the visitor came from, such as email, social media, or cost-per-click advertising
Campaign: identifies the name of the campaign the visitor engaged with, such as “Summer Sale” or “Black Friday”
Content: identifies the specific content used in an ad, such as a banner or text link.
Term: identifies the keyword used in paid search campaigns, influencer campaigns, gifting, and ambassador programs.
For each UTM parameter, you must select a pre-defined or dynamic value, or enter your own custom value.
Dynamic Values:
Creator Handle
Project Name
Link Offer Name
Pre-defined Values:
Instagram
Aspire
Facebook
Custom Values: enter a custom UTM parameter and custom value, or select from a pre-defined or dynamic value..
For custom parameters, you can use ‘+’, ‘-’ or ‘_’ if you wish to separate two or more words.
📌 Important: You cannot edit the UTM fields once you add members to the Offer and begin generating links.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if a value does not exist for a parameter?
If a value does not exist for a UTM parameter, we will leave it blank. For example, if you are using utm_campaign={creator_ig_username} and a creator does not have an Instagram username on their member profile, we will not enter a value for utm_campaign.
Example: &utm_source=aspire&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=
How is the project name selected when using {project_name} as a dynamic parameter?
At this time, the dynamic UTM parameter for {project_name} will only work if that Link Offer is connected to a project. If an offer has not been connected to a project, the links will be generated with an empty value for this parameter.
Can we add UTMs to previously created Link Tracking Offers?
At this time, we only support the ability to add UTMs to Link Tracking Offers with no members. If you haven't generated a link for any members within an Offer yet, you can edit the offer to add UTMs. Once you add members to an Offer and begin generating links, you cannot add UTMs or edit the UTM fields you selected.
